Use Your Feet as an Act of Self-Advocacy

Transcript:

I remember it like it was yesterday. Sitting in the board room. Two colleagues in the room with me and 3 executives on the screen (pre-covid).

We had barely started when one of the executives said:

“You have a lot to learn about product management, Jamie. You are missing something critical in this product.”

I can still feel the energy shift in my body to pure anger as he continued.

“We need a link at the top of the page to quickly access the information”

And I snapped inside. I’d like to think I calmly stated…

“Excuse me, but I want to clarify a few things. 1) I have had a significant amount of experience in product. I spent most of my career prior to this job in Product Management. 2) If you let us actually start, you will see that we did address this concern.”

My whole body was buzzing. Why?

Because I actually had the most true Product Management experience in the whole room. Experience that came from companies like DoubleClick and Google.

Learning from the best of the best. Everyone else in that room had only worked at one company – which was not a Product organization and did not view itself as a Technology Company.

In that moment, I realized that even though I had been at the organization for 5 years. The leaders in “Product” did not know me.

They did not know my experience and expertise in Product Management and didn’t want too.

I spoke up for myself in that moment, but also made the decision to leave the organization because I knew I could be the best Product Manager in the world and it would never land there.

I would never be seen as one at that company.

It’s when I realized that sometimes advocating for ourselves is actually about saying good bye and moving on.

That’s why I created Unleash Your Voice, so that you can learn when it is important to use your voice versus when it is important to use your feet.

You will dive into what it takes for you to speak your mind and advocate for yourself in all sorts of different situations. Ones that you might not even expect to show up in your life.

Are you ready?

Join me and a select group of 20 women on this journey to advocating and promotion yourself in ways you never did before.

The doors will be closing on Thursday at midnight CST or when the first 20 women sign up.
